Darkness Reclaimed: Healing Beyond Love & Light
When I was young, I had a fascination with fairy tales. Not the curated versions Disney became so well-known for, though I devoured those too. No, mine was a fascination with the elements of the original fairy tales that made grown-ups argue these dark narratives were not meant for children. It wasn’t that I was obsessed with evil, but rather, I understood, even at an early age, that there’s a magnificent power in the realm of the shadow that we can use to heal, to become expansive, and to ultimately create lives that feel supple, fulfilling, and well-lived.
The Power of Embracing Darkness
Yet how often do we sit with the heartbreak and pain of our lives? How devoted are we to courting the aspects of self we fear and judge most harshly? How willing are we to get to know the true darkness within and honor it as part of the self?
In my experience, we’ve become a people that would sooner hide behind tired old platitudes like “everything happens for a reason” than take the time to put all the spiritual bypassing aside and take a deep dive into the realm of shadow from which we can gain such a tremendous amount of clarity, healing, empowerment, self-agency, and unwavering fulfillment.
This space we so often run away from is where true alchemy takes place. It’s where we can uncover the deep-seated patterns that for too long have kept us entrenched in toxic relationships, jobs, and states of existence, and it’s where we can create mindfully sovereign lives that feel like a dream come true. Not because everything is perfect and happy-ever-after, but because we’ve become adept at being present with and becoming the ultimate authority in our lives precisely as they are, without fearing the sharper edges we will always be presented with.
Like the original fairy tales, our lives are filled with darkness, hardship, heartbreak, and loss. Though it may be tempting to shy away from these elements, when we deny the fullness of this existence, we miss out on the profoundly transformative power of embracing our shadows.
The Realm of the Dark Feminine
As the years have gone by, my understanding of this darkness has expanded and become a beautiful symphony of unwavering devotion, tender self-awareness, and radical ownership. I’ve come to recognize this as being deeply ingrained in the realm of the Dark Feminine. When I speak of the Dark Feminine, I’m not referring to the false representation we’ve been subjected to, in the media and old belief systems, where she’s portrayed as nothing but a temptress, or a cold and callous disconnected ‘femme fatale’. This is far removed from Her true essence.
For decades, we’ve been taught to fear the darkness, to look upon it as evil and demonic. Yet, we’ve never chosen to ask this shadow aspect of life and self the kinds of questions it’s been longing for us to ask. These are the questions that can help us heal so deeply that we’re finally able to move beyond old patterns and take up space in this world from a place of mindful sovereignty and expansive empowerment beyond our wildest dreams.
The Legacy of Integration
As spiritual beings drawn to the light and wishing to leave a positive imprint on this earth, we’ve become too enamored with the language of spiritual bypassing, which keeps us from our most potent legacy yet: a legacy of deep integration and wild self-reclamation. A legacy of long-lasting self-love and embodied living. A legacy we can be proud of, not because of our achievements or how picture-perfect our lives were, but because of how impactful, deeply lived, and honestly experienced our lives were.
Can you imagine how much more ample your life would be if you stopped trying to force yourself to forgive someone because, deep down, you didn’t want to feel the anger, the hurt, or the pain they caused you? What if instead, you learned to honor the truth of your experience and spent time caring for yourself so deeply that one day, holding onto the resentment no longer felt suitable for your highest good, self, or potential?
What if you stopped believing that to create the life of your dreams or become the aligned match to the love of your life, you had to be in a ‘positive’ or ‘high vibe’ state of existence no matter what? Instead, you could get to know yourself so deeply that you couldn’t help but be madly in love with yourself, thereby making yourself available for, aware of, and properly attuned to welcoming all you’ve ever desired in your life.
This is the language of the Dark Feminine in earnest. A tale that speaks of the kind of love that can change the world, and the kind of being that leaves an undeniable mark upon this world, not because everything you touch turns to perfection, but because even when things are uncomfortable, painful, or terrifying, you choose to get up every morning and decide who you get to be as you move through the darkness.
Writing Your Own Fairy Tale
Spirituality is a gift, and opening ourselves up to the possibility of more through the understanding of frequency, vibration, and energy is beautiful, but so too is the process of dating the shadows. When you understand the difference between a shadow and a true demon, and when you recognize that the things that remain hidden ask only that we shine a light upon them so that they too may be transformed, then too, will your life be transformed.
By reclaiming your darkness and moving beyond simplistic spiritual narratives, you open yourself to profound healing and growth. This journey isn’t always easy or comfortable, but it offers the potential for greater wholeness, authenticity, and self-awareness.
Remember, without a witch, there is no spell, and without a spell, there is no happy ending. What’s more, without a heart-breaking journey, there is no triumph, no victory, no glory, no adventure, and no chance for true love to grow.
As you integrate all aspects of self — light and shadow — you cultivate a more genuine and empowering spirituality that honors the full spectrum of human experience. In doing so, you write your own fairy tale, complete with all the darkness and light that makes life truly magical. You step into the power of the Dark Feminine, asking the questions that lead to deep healing and transformation, and create lives of impact and power, none of which demands perfection, self-dismissal, or high-vibes only.
