The Spotlight Of Visibility Vs The Quiet Work Of Resilient Leadership

Resilient leadership strategy in action

Visibility tests leaders in ways skill alone cannot. Confidence gets you into the room, but resilience is what keeps you steady in it.

We have all laughed and marvelled at Elle Woods in Legally Blonde, and the way she walks into Harvard Law underestimated and dismissed. On the surface, her resilience could have been about grit alone, proving people wrong by working twice as hard. But if you look deeper, that is not how she wins. Elle succeeds because she holds steady under the pressure of being seen. She stays true to her values, leverages her strengths, and adapts with clarity. Her visibility is not performance, it is resilience revealed.

As Harvard Business Review notes, resilience is less about innate toughness and more about intentionally building the structures that sustain you when pressure rises.

For leaders, visibility works the same way. It is not resilience in itself, but it is where resilience is tested. Every time you step onto a stage, challenge an old system, show up with a new idea, or step up to lead, you face scrutiny, judgment, or misunderstanding. It is resilience that allows you to remain steady under that pressure.

Why Visibility Tests Resilient Leadership

Most leaders I meet through my consulting practice, Vermelho, are not short on skill. What unsettles them is exposure. Visibility feels risky. They sense that if they step forward, they will be criticized, dismissed, or labelled “too much”.

This fear is real. But it is not a confidence issue, it is a resilience issue. Confidence may give you the voice to speak, but resilience is what steadies you when the reaction is not what you hoped.

Resilient leadership strategy prepares leaders for this test. It builds the capacity to stay calm in scrutiny, to recover quickly from judgment, to build honest and supportive allies, and to keep leading without shrinking. Without resilience, visibility is fragile. With resilience, visibility becomes influence.

Resilient Leadership Strategy: Preparing for the Test

Creating a resilient leadership strategy is proactive. It does not wait for the storm to hit before building strength. Leaders who want to hold steady under visibility need to design resilience into their leadership. That means:

1. Recovery as foundation

Resilience is drained fastest when leaders are exhausted, and visibility magnifies that drain. Leaders who build recovery rituals such as daily resets, non-negotiable breaks, and reflection practices walk into visibility with capacity in reserve.

2. Boundaries as guardrails

Visibility invites opinions, and not all of them are fair. Without clear boundaries, leaders risk being pulled in every direction. Resilience means knowing what you will not sacrifice. Be clear on your values, your wellbeing, your clarity. Boundaries hold you steady when visibility tests them.

3. Culture as reinforcement

No leader stands alone. When visibility tests resilience, a culture of trust and support becomes the safety net. Leaders who model resilience invite their teams to mirror it, creating shared steadiness instead of isolation.

A Personal Lens on Being a Resilient Leader

I am no stranger to the risk of being visible. In 2015, I stepped into a Chief of Operations role with optimism, only to be tasked with making 70 percent of the organization redundant on my very first day. Within a year, I became CEO and watched as our primary contract, which provided 90 percent of our income, disappeared due to federal government changes.

We rebuilt trust, created new income streams, and elevated our brand. Despite this, the Board chose to close the business, fearful that we had pivoted too far from our original work. Telling my team their hard work would end was one of the hardest things I have ever done.

That experience shook my confidence and created deep self-talk doubts, particularly the fear that no one would ever hire me again as the “CEO of a business that had closed”. But it also demanded that I build a resilience strategy that went beyond grit. From that came my practice Vermelho in 2017, and eventually Whisper & Thread in 2024, both born from the belief that resilience and self-talk can be designed into leadership, business, and life.

What I have learned is that with both my brands visibility is unavoidable. At Whisper & Thread, we have not only launched a product, we have started conversations about self-talk and resilience. As a result, I have needed to step into award ceremonies, interviews, and spaces where the vision of that brand might not be understood.

And today, as I scale Vermelho into a larger consulting practice with associate consultants and a co-operative to support others like me, I must also step into arenas where my ideas and ways of working may be challenged.

What has carried me is not confidence alone. It has been the resilience strategy I built long before, with recovery, boundaries, and culture. In both my businesses, confidence gets me in the room, but resilience keeps me steady in it.

How Leaders Can Prepare for Their Visibility Test

If visibility is a test of your resilience, the question for leaders is simple: are you ready for it?

Ask yourself:

– What practices keep me steady before I step into the spotlight?

– Where do I need clearer boundaries to protect my energy in public spaces?

– Do I have a culture around me that reinforces resilience, or do I carry it alone?

– Am I waiting for confidence to arrive, or am I building the resilience that sustains it?

Visibility will always feel uncomfortable. It exposes you to judgment, challenge, and risk. But it also exposes your leadership to possibility. Confidence may put you forward, but resilience is what keeps you there.
