How to Shift Your Mindset After a Setback: Lessons from a Life That Almost Wasn’t

Shift your mindset after a setback

It might sound outrageous to say, but I’ve survived what many wouldn’t.

Kidney disease. Endless surgeries. Life-threatening complications. I’ve spent birthdays in hospital beds, missed milestones, and stared down death more than once. And yet, I’m still here, speaking on stages, writing books, and mentoring others through their darkest moments.

That’s because I learned how to shift my mindset after a setback early on. I had two choices. I could either accept the cards I’ve been dealt in life and make the most of it or let it beat me. And the second option wasn’t a choice I was willing to make.

If you’re a woman in business, leadership or entrepreneurship, setbacks will happen. What defines your future isn’t the fall but the story you tell yourself afterwards.

Redefine your setbacks from suffering to strength

There was a moment in 2022 that still sits heavy in my chest. I’d just turned 30. Life felt stable for once. I had a job I loved, a thriving small business with my husband, and we were even talking about starting a family.

Then, one Sunday, I woke up drenched in sweat, heart racing, breath shallow. My husband called an ambulance. I was rushed to hospital. Another emergency. Another fight for my life.

This wasn’t new for me. I’ve lived with chronic illness since birth. But it reminded me that no matter how far we’ve come, life can knock us sideways when we least expect it.

The key is knowing how to shift your mindset after a setback so that instead of staying stuck, you move forward stronger.

What a setback is really telling you

I believe every setback comes with a message. For me, it’s always been: “You’re not done yet.”

That shift in perspective changed my life. I stopped asking, “Why me?” and started asking, “What now?” I knew I wanted to find a way to turn my struggles into something that could help others who were facing difficult circumstances.

I started writing my book I Should Be F’N Dead!, and I launched my podcast to share my truth with anyone who needed to hear that health challenges, trauma, or failure don’t define you.

3 ways to shift your mindset after a setback

Whether you’re dealing with business burnout, a failed launch, or something deeper, here’s how I’ve learned to turn my lowest points into fuel for growth:

1. Feel it, then frame it

I’m not here to preach toxic positivity. Grieve the loss. Honour the frustration. But don’t live there. The turning point is when you choose to see the lesson, even if it takes time.

2. Take one powerful next step

After surgery, my first step was literal. Less than 12 hours post-op, I was told to get out of bed and walk. I thought they were mad. But one step led to another, and another, and then, eventually, healing.

What’s one step you can take today? An email? A conversation? A new idea?

3. Protect your energy like your life depends on it

Your thoughts shape your outcomes. Research shows that people with a positive, resilient mindset are more likely to recover from challenges and achieve long-term goals. So, guard your inner dialogue.

When business feels like a battle

Women in business are often told to be “strong”. But real strength comes from knowing how to reset when things go wrong.

Maybe your latest offer didn’t convert. Maybe someone copied your content. Maybe you’re just tired of being tired.

I see you. And I want you to know: this is your pivot point. You get to decide what this moment means.

Your Story Isn’t Over — It’s Just Getting Good

If I’d let my diagnosis define me, I would have missed out on everything good that’s happened since — becoming a best-selling author, starting a podcast, speaking to rooms filled with incredible women, and hearing the words “you’ve helped me heal” more times than I can count.

The truth is, knowing how to shift your mindset after a setback doesn’t make you immune to pain. It makes you capable of rising through it.

Your scars don’t make you weak — they make you relatable. Your failures don’t end your story — they give it depth.

From Surviving to Thriving

I called my book I Should Be F’N Dead! because, medically speaking, I really shouldn’t be here. But I am. And I’m just getting started. If I can move forward with half a toolkit, trust me—you can too.

Let your scars become symbols of strength. Let your past remind you what you’ve already overcome. And let every “no” fuel the “yes” you’re working toward.

Your mindset is your loudest internal voice. Pick one thing you can be grateful for and focus your energy there.
