I started my business a year ago when my life was literally in tatters. I had suffered a burnout breakdown, gone through weight loss surgery, which completely changed who I was and as a result almost lost my marriage of 26 years.
These series of catastrophes led me to reassess everything. I knew I wanted to harness my coaching skills built from years of working in the Health and Social care system as a manager but had no idea where to start. I was burnt out and broken.
I knew whatever I did in life from that point onwards had to have meaning and purpose. I didn’t want to just make money – of course that is important and being independent is one of my core values but I wanted to make a difference and make a living that felt aligned, authentic and sustainable.
For many coaches, the idea of earning well can feel uncomfortable and I was certainly no exception to this. We go into this work because we feel deeply about people – not for profit. BUT Here’s the truth. Just as you can’t pour from an empty cup – you can’t serve from an empty bank account!
I learned a few things very quickly and this is what I want to share with you today. One new coaching business owner to another.
Creating financial flow in your coaching business isn’t about chasing sales – it’s about building structure so you can make money with purpose. We have all heard the “know, Trust and Like” theory of business but when you are just starting out, building Structure, Clarity, and Confidence was the key.
Start by building from purpose not pressure.
– It’s ok to build gently and slowly.
– Comparing yourself with established business or trying to run before you can walk can damage the very foundations you are building.
Having your ‘why’ as a clear driver to start laying foundations.
– I knew I wanted women to rediscover their strength, self-worth and calm – all the things I had lost so building from this place was my purpose.
– I worked on myself, first and foremost. This developed me as a coach – your first and most important client is always yourself. When you stay rooted in your purpose it naturally attracts the right clients and opportunities. Your energy is more important than your offer. This creates a firm structure on which you can grow.
In coaching, Money follows transformation.
– What are you offering your clients? How is this valuable to them? When clients feel seen, supported and empowered, they make the changes that make your coaching business a deeply valuable investment not an expense.
– Action Step: Anything you offer has to align with this. Putting a client’s needs first creates a clarity in your offers.
Build confidence by starting small.
– A 1 to 1 coaching offer. A small group programme.
– Whatever aligns to you – but do it well. Focus on it, define it and work on it until you are so confident in it that you can then build.
– A mistake I see many other ‘new’ coaches make is trying to do ‘everything’ all at once.
– Individual coaching, lots of offers, group programmes, digital products etc.
– Trying to offer so many things to generate an income ultimately hinders progress.
Remember your worth and wealth are connected. When you value your work, your time and your energy, the world mirrors this back to you. Building confidence in yourself and your coaching takes time. Be patient.
Making money in coaching becomes a reflection of how many lives you are helping shift and improve and that is something to be proud of. Making money isn’t about ‘Hustle’, it’s about heart. It’s building a business that feels like you, that is rooted in you and your purpose, that is built on a firm and solid foundation of structure, clarity, and confidence.
