Inner Strength Through Adversity resilience journey

Discovering Inner Strength Through Life’s Scars

I am the first severely scarred woman to win a prestigious beauty pageant, earning the title of Mrs. Colorado 2021. My victory challenges traditional ideals of beauty and proves that true beauty radiates from the essence of who we are, not just our outward appearance. The scars covering nearly 70% of my body – marks of survival from a devastating house explosion when I was 10 – once seemed like a child’s worst nightmare, but I’ve learned that life’s scars don’t have to define us negatively. They became powerful symbols of resilience, courage, and strength.

My journey to the pageant stage was anything but easy, more like scaling a mountain of self-doubt and societal expectations. Along the way, I discovered that courage isn’t about erasing pain or imperfections – it’s about fiercely loving ourselves through them.

To truly embrace myself, I had to see through a lens of grace, honor, and humility, refusing to be boxed in by the superficial standards of the world around me. It required intentionality and a shift in perspective. My scars became not a source of shame but a testament to survival – a visible map of the battles I had endured and won.

As C.S. Lewis once said, “Experience is the most brutal of teachers, but you learn – my God do you learn.” The pain we desperately wish to escape from, often holds the seeds of our greatest growth. The very experiences that feel like they’ll break us have the power to shape us into exactly who we’re meant to be.

Survival and the Emotional Battle

In the aftermath of the explosion that forever altered my life, survival felt like an endless battle. I managed to find my breath again and keep my heart beating, but the emotional and psychological suffocation delivered blows just as debilitating as my extensive physical injuries. Everywhere I looked – on television, at the movies – scars were portrayed as the mark of villains, never anyone considered beautiful.

In my young mind, my scars seemed to place me in the category of the “other” – a character no one rooted for. Could I ever break free from that narrative? Could I ever shine beyond the surface of my seemingly ugly appearance?

It took years to learn that negative thinking only perpetuates pain. To create a positive life, I had to confront my inner dialogue, rewrite my script, and build a new narrative – when grounded in grace, gratitude, and resilience.

Over time, through deep self-reflection and courage to shift my mindset, I unearthed what I call a Quiet Inner Strength. It isn’t about shouting my worth to the world; it’s about deeply believing it and letting that belief radiate outward – quietly, yet powerfully.

Much of my courage stems from controlling my thoughts and staying grounded in gratitude. This is no small feat. It’s intentional, ongoing work that I perform daily – practices like journaling, movement meditations through running, and creating rituals that keep my mind positive and hopeful.

While this inner labor often goes unseen by others, its effects are palpable. People can feel the calm, joy, and peace I work so hard to cultivate, and that energy resonates far beyond words.

But courage isn’t just about cultivating peace; It’s also about facing our fears. Recognizing and confronting fear is the first step to rising above it. For years, my fear of fire consumed me. Even a simple candle would spark terror, flooding my mind with catastrophic scenarios. I avoided candles, gas grills, campfires – anything with a flame. My fear was logical, given my history, but it was holding me back from living fully.

Confronting Fear with Strength and Resilience

One day, I decided I couldn’t let this fear control me anymore. I began small, sitting with a single candle, training my brain to see fire as a source of light and warmth rather than destruction. From there, I pushed myself to buy a gas grill, assemble it, and light it – despite trembling hands and a racing heart. Each time I faced my fear, it lessened. Slowly, I realized that the joy of eating delicious foods far outweighed the slim chance of disaster.

My final and most profound step was confronting fire head on with the help of a trusted firefighter friend of mine. Together, we geared up and sat in a controlled room engulfed in flames for over 20 minutes. Was it terrifying to have flames surround me once again? Absolutely! But I chose to approach that room with a positive mindset, a grateful heart, and a faith-centered spirit. By the end, I had found peace in the very presence of my greatest fear. It was nothing short of miraculous.

So, I ask you: What “room on fire” do you need to step into? What fear or obstacle is holding you back from your greatness? Life will always have its scars and challenges, but we cannot let them weigh us down or stop us from achieving our life dreams.

If I, a woman with scars covering my body, can rewrite my story and become a state winning beauty queen, then I know you, too, can harness your courage. Use the tools that nurture your spirit, strengthen your resolve, and fuel your faith. With the courage within, you can make your impossible; possible – and in doing so, rise above life scars with grace and strength.
