The Moment Everything Changed
“Patti, you’ve qualified for an MS clinical trial. An IV infusion every six months. Promising early data. Minimal side effects. Do you want in?”
I didn’t just want in – I needed in.
I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis during my first year teaching high school physical education. Five years later, I left the only job I’d ever wanted. My identity – the one I’d built my life around – disappeared overnight.
Before MS, I was an athlete, always on the go. Cycling on weekends, hitting the gym, filling my calendar with friends and activities. Maybe this drug would be the spark for my comeback.
The Placebo Revelation
During the first infusion, I felt magic rush through my veins. Stronger, clearer, more alive. That night, I scrubbed the floors and vacuumed the rugs. At the grocery store, I didn’t lean on the cart – I raced through the aisles. Woohoo!
After my second infusion, I cleaned closets and rearranged cupboards like a woman on a mission.
But then a letter came from the UBC MS Clinic: the trial was ending early due to lack of efficacy. What? That couldn’t be right—I felt unstoppable.
And then the sentence that dropped me to my knees: Please note you were on the placebo.
No drug. No magic infusion. Just sugar water.
But my body – my life – had changed. How?
The drug didn’t heal me. I did.
That was the moment I realized: maybe mindset isn’t just part of healing – it is the healing.
Wrestling with Identity After Diagnosis
But truthfully, I still struggled. My teacher identity – competitive, energetic, and full of life – clashed with my new reality. My first symptom was double vision. Over time, my balance, mobility, and cognition shifted, too.
I still remember sitting on a gym bench while my colleague taught our class. I couldn’t stand. I couldn’t lead. No matter how badly I wanted to rise, I stayed frozen on that bench.
But losing my identity was harder than losing physical abilities. I was no longer the happy, joke-telling person I’d always been.
It hit me: MS didn’t just impact my body. It stole who I thought I was.
This was soul-crushing for a high achiever.
Rewriting the Story: Mindset as Medicine
But here’s where the story turns.
The grief didn’t destroy me. It invited me to release who I was – and discover who I could become.
It wasn’t easy. It wasn’t fast.
But by shifting my mindset, like I unknowingly did during the placebo trial, I redefined resilience.
I learned to honor my limits, pace myself, and still show up – flawed, but present.
I stopped waiting for a cure. I started becoming one.
Helping Others Flip Their Script
Today, I help others living with hidden illness shift their script and rewrite their story.
I created a five-part mindset framework that guides people to rebuild after diagnosis.
Through my talks, writing, and my platform, fearless with MS, I teach what I lived: mindset isn’t a luxury. It’s the key to a life worth living.
Building a positive mindset doesn’t mean ignoring reality. It means choosing how you respond to it.
The Bigger Message: You Are Not Broken
I’ll never forget my graduate school presentation at the University of Toronto. Twenty minutes in, sharing how MS stole my career, I broke down sobbing.
I was sure my classmates would judge me.
I was wrong.
When I finished, the professor invited the class to respond. Their message wasn’t pity – it was truth: Stop living in your illness story. Every time you retell it, you stay stuck in that moment.
They weren’t dismissing my pain. They were inviting me to move forward.
And that’s exactly what I invite you to do.
Your illness doesn’t define you.
You are not your symptoms.
You are the author of your story. If you don’t like the chapter you’re in – rewrite it.
Strength isn’t measured by what your body can do. It’s measured by your courage to rise each day and claim your worth.
Stop waiting for external fixes. Start looking within.
14-Day Challenge
The real medicine isn’t in a bottle. It’s in you. It always was.
Say this aloud every morning before your feet hit the floor:
“The real medicine is in me.”
Say it for 14 straight days. If you miss one, start over. Share the challenge with a friend – make a bet, make it fun, and feel the shift.
Now what?
You are not your disease. Let me say that again: you are not your disease.
Shift your mindset. Rewrite the narrative you tell yourself and the world.
Be your own champion. Celebrate your small wins. Build a meaningful, joyful life – on your terms.
Move forward every day – a tiny step still counts.
Honor your feelings. Stay true to the person you want to be.
This won’t be easy. But it will be worth it. I promise.
I’m living proof.
You’ve got this.
I’ve got you.
