Breaking The Author’s Ceiling: The Cost Of Staying Silent

Women’s Empowerment Through Authorship inspiration

There comes a time in a woman’s life when success no longer brings the satisfaction and drive it once did. On the surface, everything looks perfect: careers built, families taken care of, expectations met, but the invisible mask of happiness slowly begins to crumble as the effort to keep pretending becomes too much.

Beneath that exterior, something is pulling you in a different direction, and one day you look in the mirror and realize you are meant for more than the life you’re living.

This moment is often the beginning of women’s empowerment in its truest form. It is the realization that reclaiming your life begins by choosing to reclaim your voice, and that requires courage.

Courage to choose differently. Courage to walk away from everything familiar. Courage to finally trust in yourself and put your needs and desires first, even when others don’t understand or turn against you.

After more than 30 years in corporate leadership, I left my executive career at 55, facing ridicule and judgment from the very same people who tried to bring me back under their control.

I followed society’s stereotype for success. I climbed the corporate ladder and was very successful; however, internally, I was miserable because I wasn’t listening to a deeper calling that had been tugging at me since my sister’s death at 46 to alcoholism.

The day I buried her was the day I realized alcohol was not the cause of her death; it was the symptom. The cause of her death was an unhealed belief system formed in childhood that told her she wasn’t good enough or worthy of the life she desired.

This experience revealed to me how many women’s lives, including my own, are controlled by inherited belief systems that we didn’t choose but unconsciously live by every day – stories passed down through generations. Beliefs that self-sacrifice proves love, that staying silent keeps the peace, and putting our needs last is a sign of devotion.

I continued to observe how women shaped by generational conditioning often lose access to their voices long before they realize it.

This is where women’s empowerment became personal for me. I couldn’t save my sister’s life, but I could honor her by helping other women reclaim what she never had a chance to.

I left my executive job to write ‘Courageously Authentic: A Woman’s Guide to Transform Pain into Power, Fear into Courage, Dreams into Reality’ – to provide tools and support for other women to break the emotional patterns and have the courage to rewrite their stories.

I meet so many women who want to share their stories. I feel their excitement, but hesitation and doubt quickly take over, and they ask me, “Who am I to write a book? Who’s going to care about my story?”

I say, “Who are you not? Who’s to say you won’t be the next Brené Brown or Maya Angelou?” I say this because the desire to write a book emerges after years of lived experience, and when you reach that moment when you finally say, “I choose me.” It’s at that moment you realize staying silent is costing you more than being seen and heard.

I call this ‘breaking the author’s ceiling’ – the invisible barrier that stops women from speaking or writing because of fear – of failure, of being seen, believing your story won’t make an impact in the world, or feeling overwhelmed by how to begin.
