Some Horror Stories Have Silver Linings: The Importance of Self-Care

Halloween is traditionally when we dive into tales of terror, spooky legends, and horror stories. But beyond the chills and thrills, these stories often reveal a deeper truth: no matter how dark the path, there’s always a way forward. I know first-hand that most people will face a horror story of their own in life. I’ve experienced moments of fear, stress, loss, and uncertainty. But just like in those eerie tales, there are always silver linings to be found, and these challenges can help us grow stronger and more resilient.

My Journey: A Story of Resilience

Life has been full of unexpected hardships for me, and while I haven’t faced monsters or supernatural forces, the stress, anxiety, and emotional toll of everyday struggles can feel just as overwhelming. I’ve faced immense health challenges—kidney failure, cancer, and countless surgeries—but through it all, I haven’t just survived; I’ve thrived. I’ve maintained a positive mindset, pursued my passions, and found joy in life’s little moments, which have helped me push through. I’ve pursued education, travelled the world, found love, and held onto my sense of humour. My greatest victory isn’t just overcoming illness but learning how to find fulfilment and purpose despite my struggles.

Self-care and Silver Linings

Over the years, I’ve come to see life’s physical, emotional, or mental struggles as opportunities for growth, even when they feel catastrophic in the moment. Like the best horror tales, there’s always a way to transform these challenges into something positive. Prioritising self-care and mental wellness has given me the tools to survive and thrive.

Self-care to me means reflecting on what truly matters, setting boundaries, and embracing self-compassion. It’s about learning to say “no” when needed, taking time to rest, and finding joy in simple moments. It’s working to address anxiety, stress, and trauma, knowing that letting them fester only makes things harder. It’s finding ways to cultivate resilience through therapy, mindfulness, and creative outlets. It’s spending time with loved ones or others facing the same challenges I have faced. Anything that makes your world a little bit brighter.

By nurturing our mental health, we build the resilience to confront life’s challenges and emerge stronger. My resilience and positive mindset prove that no matter how frightening life’s horror stories may seem, there is always hope, a way forward, and a silver lining. There is a chance to change our lives for the better. That is where you will find your silver lining, no matter what that looks like for you.

My Work

My book, I Should Be F’N Dead!, has offered hope for many, with practical advice and emotional support to those going through their own personal challenges. Finding humour, joy, and strength even in the darkest moments allows us to keep moving forward. I’m dedicated to empowering others, especially women, to embrace their inner strength and prioritise their self-care and mental health. Reaching out and seeking support is the first step – you never have to be alone.
