When we talk about technology we often think first about boardrooms dominated by the men of big tech giants shaped by Silicon Valley. Beneath that facade, women are leading a quieter revolution. They’re proving that the future of technology is not only about what machines can do, but about the values we embed into the code.
One woman stands at the center of that shift: Mira Murati.
Most people don’t even know her name, but Mira Murati is one of the most powerful female leaders in the AI tech world. She was CEO of OpenAI for 2 days. Now her own AI startup is valued at $12 billion. She served as Chief Technology Officer at OpenAI from 2018 to September 2024 when she officially stepped down to pursue her own venture. In February 2025, she launched her own AI startup called Thinking Machines Lab.
Born in Albania, Mira grew up during political upheaval. At 16, she won a scholarship to Pearson College UWC in Canada, where she studied engineering. Murati’s journey has always been about dreaming beyond borders. She cut her teeth in engineering when working at Tesla Motors, and later joined OpenAI when the world barely knew its name. At every step, she was often the only woman in the room yet she built, led, and shaped technologies that would redefine our future. By 2018, she was OpenAI’s Chief Technology Officer, she helped bring ChatGPT to life giving humanity its first glimpse of generative AI at scale.
She was shaping how AI should be built. She spoke openly about bias, transparency, and safety. “AI should be aligned with human intention and ultimately in the service of humanity.”
But when Big Tech came knocking with billion-dollar offers, she chose something else: integrity. It was that decision she made when she was standing at the top of success that make her story remarkable. She was asking harder questions: What kind of future are we building with AI? Who does it serve? And who gets left behind if we aren’t careful?
She leads Thinking Machines Lab with ethics, transparency, and humanity at the center of innovation. She is not just building AI. She is building trust in the future. Murati said on X that the company would be sharing its first product “in the next couple of months.”
Her leadership was tested almost immediately. Reports surfaced that Mark Zuckerberg tried to lure away her entire team, allegedly offering $1 billion to just one engineer. Every single person declined. Why? Because they believed in her vision. That kind of loyalty is rare.
Murati is not just building artificial intelligence. She’s building trust in a future where AI doesn’t belong to a handful of tech giants, but to humanity. She represents a new model of innovation: one where integrity sits at the center of progress.
A different, more feminine view. Innovation without accountability is reckless. Scaling without ethics is dangerous. And power without humanity is hollow. Mira brings empathy, responsibility, and integrity into spaces that weren’t designed for us and she is doing that at the highest levels.
That’s why her story belongs here, in our Innovation Issue – as a reminder that the future isn’t only about machines becoming more human, it’s about humans daring to keep humanity at the heart of innovation.
At Women Thrive, we champion women who disrupt industries and reimagine business in a new way. Mira Murati is one of those women. Bold, ethical, feminine, and unapologetically human.
