The Power of Steady Leadership: Why Calm Is the New Strength

Resilience and Self Trust in Leadership

Luisa Hogan is a Leadership Resilience Strategist and Founder of Vermelho Consulting. Her work centres on redefining resilience as steadiness rather than strain, drawing on psychology, neuroscience, and lived experience leading organisations through major change.

Known for her calm authority and incisive thinking, Luisa teaches leaders and entrepreneurs how to regulate under pressure, build self-trust, and make deliberate decisions in uncertain environments. Her latest venture, Whisper & Thread, weaves mental wellbeing into everyday wear by embedding personalised affirmations inside the garments.

1. It’s an honour to speak with you today. Why don’t you give us some details about you and your story. How did you get to where you are today?

I always have a little giggle at myself because I did not set out to become an entrepreneur or a resilience strategist. My turning point came years ago when I inherited the CEO role of a failing organisation. It was an impossible mandate. I tried to steady a sinking ship and eventually had to lead the organisation through its closure. From the outside, I looked composed but on the inside I was full of self-doubt and fear of failing.

That experience forced me to rethink everything I believed about resilience and leading change. I realised endurance is not resilience. I saw my team rally and connect through the most difficult moments. That incredible team showed me that powering through is often a slow collapse. When I started Vermelho, I wanted to help leaders shift away from that outdated model of “being strong” toward something grounded, regulated, and sustainable.

2. What inspired you to become an entrepreneur?

Initially, entrepreneurship was a necessity. I assumed no one would hire a CEO who had closed an organisation, even though the failure was not caused by me. But it also became a decision based on integrity.

I wanted to build work that aligned with what I knew to be true: that steadiness outperforms strain, and self-trust is a leader’s most important asset. Creating my own business gave me the autonomy to teach that message without compromise as well as support leaders through culture change that would save their businesses.

3. I’m sure your success has not come easily. What challenges have you had to overcome along the way?

I had to rebuild my confidence after that CEO experience. When you lead an organisation through failure, it stays with you unless you actively work through it. Even though the failure was structural, I still carried a sense of responsibility for not being able to save it.

I also had to learn to slow down. I am naturally driven and I like taking on new projects. But strategy requires stillness, and my hardest work has been training myself to pause rather than react.

Balancing entrepreneurship with motherhood has also reshaped me. Becoming a mother has been the most gratifying experience of my life. It forced me to prioritise what actually matters, not what looks impressive from the outside.

4. What do you think is the biggest challenge female entrepreneurs face today?

The expectation to be everything at once. Strategic, capable, warm, visible, composed, and endlessly productive. Women often feel pressure to hold the image of competence without ever showing the cost of maintaining it.

What women need to know is that they are already highly capable. We do not need more training in perfection. What we need is permission to be human. It is ok not to have a perfect day. It is ok to rest. It is ok to have boundaries. It is ok to make mistakes. None of that diminishes leadership. In fact, it strengthens it.

5. Let’s talk about the work you do. What do you specialise in and why should someone work with you?

I specialise in leadership resilience, specifically the shift from reactivity to regulation. I help leaders and entrepreneurs create steadiness as a skill rather than a performance. My approach is practical and evidence-based. I teach the kind of resilience that holds under pressure.

People work with me when they want clarity and confidence. They come to me when they want to shift from self-doubt to self-trust. My focus is leadership capability, not performance.

6. What is the most important lesson you have learned as an entrepreneur?

If you do not regulate yourself, your business will regulate you. Every major decision I have regretted came from urgency or ego. Every excellent decision came from steadiness, curiosity, and a clear baseline of self-trust.

7. In terms of legacy, what is the mark you would like to leave on the world?

I want to shift the way people understand resilience. I want leaders, entrepreneurs, and young women to grow up knowing that calm is not weakness, pausing is not hesitation, and regulation is real strength. If my work helps even a small percentage of people stop defining their worth through strain, that is legacy enough.
