Playing the Long Game: How I Overcame Burnout and Learned to Celebrate Every Win

Overcoming burnout recovery

Overcoming Burnout and Embracing the Long Game

I should be dead. That’s not an exaggeration. By all medical reasoning, I shouldn’t be here writing this. But I am.

I was born with a severe kidney condition that led to countless surgeries, a transplant, and more hospital visits than I can remember. I have fought battles that many wouldn’t dream of facing, and I’m still here. And because I survived, I know that resilience isn’t just a word—it’s a way of life.

For female entrepreneurs, founders, and leaders, resilience is equally crucial. Building a business, pursuing a dream, or pushing through tough seasons in life requires a long-game mentality. We often feel pressure to move fast, achieve quickly, and be constantly productive. But real, sustainable success is about small, consistent steps forward, celebrating progress, and refusing to let burnout steal our purpose.

Burnout isn’t just a buzzword

We hear about burnout all the time. But what is it, really? Burnout isn’t just feeling tired—it’s a state of complete exhaustion, where your passion turns to frustration and your energy disappears.

For me, burnout wasn’t just mental or emotional—it was physical. At one point, my body literally couldn’t function on its own. I know what it feels like to be at the edge, and I know how vital it is to listen to warning signs before it’s too late.

For women in business, it’s easy to ignore these signs. We push through because we’re expected to be strong, independent, and unstoppable. But true strength comes from knowing when to rest, when to step back, and when to acknowledge that survival is a victory in itself.

Adopting a long-game mindset

If there’s one thing my journey has taught me, it’s that small progress is still progress. There were days I couldn’t walk, eat, or even sit up without help. But I took things one step at a time—literally.

This same principle applies to entrepreneurship and leadership.

Too often, we’re obsessed with the big wins—the funding, the six-figure revenue, the viral moment. But success isn’t built on one big win. It’s built on hundreds of small ones:

  • Showing up on the tough days
  • Learning from setbacks instead of giving up
  • Prioritising mental and physical health
  • Celebrating progress—even if it’s not perfect

I used to think my life was on hold until I was fully healed. But then I realised that every single day I survived was a win. And in business, the same rule applies. Every email sent, every challenge overcome, every lesson learned—that’s progress.

Survival is the ultimate achievement

Today, I’m alive. That alone is a massive win. I survived what was meant to kill me.

And if you’re reading this, you’re surviving too. You’ve made it through personal struggles, business challenges, and moments where you wanted to quit.

So let’s start celebrating the journey—not just the end goal. Whether it’s making it through a hard week, securing a small client, or simply choosing to keep going when it feels impossible—these moments deserve recognition.

Many of us will know the story of the tortoise and the hare and the idea that slow and steady wins the race. Because here’s the truth: success isn’t about speed. It’s about endurance.

Keep going, keep growing

If there’s one thing I want every woman in business to take away from my journey, it’s this: Don’t let burnout steal your joy, and don’t let small setbacks make you quit.

Play the long game. Celebrate your resilience. And remember—you’re already winning.
