Mastering The Art Of Presence: How Women Can Command The Room & The Mic
It’s not the message. It’s the messenger.
Before anyone notices your shoes, purse, or appearance, they feel your presence first. Your aura is what commands the room before you even speak. It’s the energy you exude, confidence in your posture, and the intention behind your gaze. When you lead with conviction, your demeanor speaks for you. With self-assurance, people not only hear your message they also believe it.
Every woman deserves to feel grounded in her voice, connected internally, while being assured of their personal power. This could mean advocating for yourself, leading a team, or navigating male-dominated spaces.
Why Body Language Is Your First Impression
Your attitude is the quiet energy that speaks for you. It is what people sense immediately through your posture, energy and expression. According to Amy Cuddy, a bestselling author and social psychologist, our body language does not just shape how others see us, it also shapes how we see ourselves.
Cuddy’s research shows that using powerful stances can actually boost self-confidence and influence the way we’re perceived by others. This is not about how you look on the outside but about the inner feeling. The way you view your worth, strength, and your talents. Confidence is reflected naturally in how one moves through every space.
Rewriting the Rules for Women in Power
Women are often conditioned to being polite, quiet and likeable, even if this means tolerating being undervalued. From a young age we are taught to be soft, digestible and that men don’t like us if we’re “too much.” A George Washington University study found that women are interrupted 33% more often than men in conversations, especially in professional settings. Unfortunately, this isn’t just in the workplace, this is deeply rooted in society. We can combat this by shifting our internal perspective using affirmations like “My opinion is valuable” or “I have the right to speak with confidence”. These small shifts in self worth are small, but are powerful steps in reclaiming the narrative.
How to Command a Room with Confidence
Taking over the room begins with your body language. I tell my clients that it is like a performance, before I walk into a room I turn “it” on. “It” is me walking into a room tall, confident and ready to work. Your voice is also powerful; speaking clearly with conviction will make the impact of your message hit harder. Entering a room like you belong will not only instills trust and confidence in yourself but others will feel it too. When it is time to speak, you’ll be ready to command attention with purpose.
The Art of Being Heard, Not Just Seen
Owning the microphone isn’t just about speaking, it’s about being heard. This comes with preparation by knowing your message, understanding your audience and anticipating potential questions. “You have to stay ready so you never have to get ready.” This does not mean you need to be perfect. Audiences connect with authenticity and vulnerability more than a perfected robot. If you become nervous, take a deep breath, pause, and remind yourself that you deserve to be here.
Connect Intention and Purpose
Breaking for a moment is powerful because you are letting your words land and allowing your audience to fully digest what you are saying. Whether you are on stage or in a work environment, connecting to your crowd matters; speak to them not at them.
Presence is not a trait, it’s a skill that can be built over time. With intention, self-awareness and practice, anyone can learn to command respect and inspire change. Take up space, speak up, walk into your next meeting with so much powerful energy and watch as everything around you changes.
