Managing Burnout and Living a Full Life
Burnout is a word that resonates deeply with many of us. In today’s fast-paced world, juggling all of our commitments, like university, a demanding career, health challenges, relationships, and personal growth can feel overwhelming. I know because I’ve been there. My journey has been a whirlwind of surviving, thriving, and learning to prioritise what truly matters. Today, I want to share how I turned my struggles into a life of meaning and resilience without succumbing to burnout.
My Journey Through Chaos
For most of my life, I was no stranger to challenges. Born with kidney disease, I spent my childhood in and out of hospitals, learning the meaning of resilience at an age when most kids were playing without a care. As I grew older, the challenges evolved. Balancing university studies, a job I loved, and my health—while supporting my husband’s entrepreneurial dreams—often felt like walking a tightrope.
In November 2022, I reached what I thought was my breaking point. After celebrating my 30th birthday and working tirelessly, I collapsed, shivering and sweating, unable to breathe. My body had had enough. That moment, surrounded by the beeping of hospital monitors, was a wake-up call. I realised I couldn’t pour from an empty cup.
Lessons Learned: Managing the Juggle
Burnout doesn’t happen overnight; it creeps up on you. Over the years, I’ve discovered strategies to manage the juggle without losing myself. These insights are the cornerstones of a fulfilled life:
- Perspective is everything
Life isn’t a competition to see who can do the most. It’s about quality, not quantity. For me, this meant accepting that I couldn’t control everything—especially my health. Instead of lamenting what I couldn’t do, I focused on what I could. This mindset shift freed me from unnecessary guilt.
- Set boundaries and stick to them
Saying no isn’t selfish; it’s essential. Whether it’s declining a work project that doesn’t align with your goals or carving out time for self-care, boundaries protect your energy. As a people-pleaser, this was a tough lesson for me, but one that saved me from overcommitting and under-delivering.
- Prioritise self-care without guilt
Self-care isn’t a luxury; it’s a necessity. It’s the yoga session that calms your mind, the journaling that processes your thoughts, or simply a walk in nature. During my recovery, I learned to honour my body’s needs and found solace in simple routines like deep breathing and gratitude journaling.
- Delegate and collaborate
You don’t have to do it all. At home, my husband and I became a team, each supporting the other’s dreams. Whether it’s at work or in your personal life, seeking help doesn’t make you weak—it makes you resourceful.
- Celebrate progress, not perfection
Every step forward, no matter how small, is a win. During one of my darkest moments, I reminded myself: “I am here. I am breathing. I am enough.” This mantra became my anchor. Celebrate what you’ve achieved instead of fixating on what’s left to do.
Backed by Science
The science agrees: burnout is preventable. According to a study by the Harvard Business Review, the keys to avoiding burnout include setting clear priorities, practising mindfulness, and nurturing meaningful relationships.
Consider this your reminder that whether you’re a founder balancing a business, a leader managing a team, or a student chasing your dreams, remember to pause. You deserve a life that’s not just full but fulfilling.
As someone who has walked through fire and come out stronger, I urge you to put things into perspective. Identify what truly matters and let go of the rest. As I often say, you’re capable of more than you realise—but only if you take care of yourself first.
