How the best leaders build clarity one honest question at a time.
Can I tell you something I wish someone had told me a few years ago? You can’t order clarity on Amazon.
Trust me. I checked. I looked for it in the next promotion, another certification, and what I was convinced was the “right” leadership role.
Spoiler alert. It wasn’t hiding in any of those places.
It Wasn’t the Promotion
A few years ago, if you’d looked at my LinkedIn profile, you probably would’ve thought everything was going great. Title? Check. Experience? Check. Leadership role? Check. Internal confidence? .. Yeah, not so much.
I did what a lot of high-achieving women do. I convinced myself another six months would fix everything.
Nothing is stranger than realizing you’re sitting at a table that no longer fits. The conversations haven’t changed. You have. The work that once energized you feels routine. Everyone else’s goals stop sounding like your own. You smile, contribute, check the boxes, and somewhere between meeting number six and your third cup of coffee, you quietly wonder what you’re even doing here.
Girl… Me too.
The Story I Was Telling Myself
Looking back, I wasn’t missing experience or capability. I’d simply stopped trusting myself. It didn’t happen overnight. It happened one questioned decision at a time. One recommendation that wasn’t taken. One meeting where I thought, maybe today isn’t the day to say anything.
Eventually, I saw something that stopped me in my tracks. I wasn’t just choosing my words carefully. I was editing myself. Those are two very different things.
Not Failing. Not Thriving. Just Existing.
We spend so much time talking about strengths and weaknesses. Personally, I think most of life happens in the grey. That’s where I found myself. Not failing. Not thriving. Just… existing.
Doing good work. Going home tired. Wondering why something still felt off, even though everything looked fine from the outside. There wasn’t one dramatic moment where everything changed. There were just enough quiet moments that I couldn’t ignore the question anymore.
Is this really who I’m becoming?
Turns Out, I Was Asking the Wrong Question
That single question changed everything. The answer took its time showing up. What changed first were the questions.
1. Instead of “What’s my next opportunity?” I started asking, “What kind of life am I actually trying to build?”
2. Instead of wondering if people would approve, I started asking, “Does this actually sound like me?”
3. And maybe my favorite: “Do I even want this?”
That’s a very different question than “Can I do it?”
Funny What Happens When You Stop Editing Yourself
Here’s what surprised me most. The clarity I’d spent years chasing didn’t arrive with the perfect role. It showed up little by little, in honest conversations, in leadership mistakes I’d rather not relive (trust me, there are a few), in unexpected successes and quiet disappointments I didn’t see coming. Every one of them had something to teach me.
Some discoveries made me smile. A few made me cringe. I’m grateful for both. Each one introduced me to another piece of the woman I was becoming.
One surprised me more than the rest. I don’t actually love leading from the top. I love leading beside people. Helping them think differently. Helping them grow. Helping them discover they’re capable of more than they realized.
Once I understood that about myself, so many other decisions became easier. Life hadn’t changed. I had.
If you’re sitting at one of those tables wondering why it doesn’t fit anymore, maybe the answer isn’t to work harder to fit. Maybe it’s to get curious. Ask yourself: What story have I been telling myself? Where have I started editing myself just to belong? What would become possible if I trusted my own judgment again?
Let those questions sit for a while. You don’t have to solve your life by Friday. (Although wouldn’t that be nice?)
Sometimes clarity doesn’t need another answer. Sometimes it just needs a little more honesty.
I don’t think the hardest seasons of my life were trying to teach me resilience. I think they were introducing me to myself. And honestly? I’m still becoming. I hope I always am.
Turns out, I’m really glad Amazon didn’t carry clarity after all. If it had shown up in two days with free shipping, I probably would’ve clicked “Buy Now” without thinking twice.
Thankfuly, clarity doesn’t work that way. The journey was never keeping me from clarity. It was quietly building it.
