How to Create a Meaningful and Profitable Career in 9 Steps

How to Create a Meaningful and Profitable Career in 9 Steps

Has this happened to you? You’re driving to work, trying to think of energizing and motivational thoughts to get you through the day. Desperately psyching yourself with positive affirmations Then you stare at the road thinking about all the tasks waiting for you.

A moment of panic ensues. How boring or stressful could a day be? Then you daydream about your ideal day and work set up and silently you ask the universe when your time will come. If this daily tug of war of thoughts is familiar, it is because it is an ongoing internal dialogue among many career professionals.

You wish to be excited about the tasks ahead, the people you work with, particularly the results you can deliver, knowing you can make a difference given the right opportunity. You want to be recognized for your engagement and hard work like we all do and dream of a meaningful career, purposeful mission and driven colleagues, with whom you can show your authentic self without fear.

If this sounds like you, then this article was written for you. I will outline nine actionable steps for you to create a sustainable career that is mission driven.

Hi, my name is Christelle Pillot, and spanning over 15 years of personal development, I started my career change from Chemical Engineering to full-time career coaching. At the onset, I was depressed, and with my three children younger than five years old, I was constantly tired chasing my sales quota and running a household. It wasn’t easy at first; I know because I was once you. This was the catalyst to my mission to guide ambitious career professionals to a better version of themselves.

I’ve asked the same questions: How can I escape this job? Where can I start to change the situation? Who could I ask to receive wise advice? Is the effort truly worth it? Am I capable? How can I stand out from the crowded marketplace? Will I still be available for my children and manage everything while looking for a new job?

Well, it took me a while to find the answers to all these questions and to be honest; I felt really alone, unable to find someone who understood me enough to take part in my journey of creating a personalized roadmap. Many business coaches I previously met didn’t take me in my entirety and, inadvertently or not, tried to fit me into their framework, and this is where a big source of failure lies.

With determination and much research, many coaching and mentoring programs, I overcame all my challenges. I transformed my private life and successfully created my business by finding solutions and tools for each problem. For the last 10 years, I have been using these techniques with my clients, helping them find their dream job and have more fun with their lives. So far, 100% of my clients following my program entirely have started or succeeded in a career change.

Are you ready to have more fun and ease in your life? Are you eager to find your life’s mission? Let’s get started!

  1. Raise Your Energy Level

The higher your energy level, the better you will feel. The better you feel, the more you can use your talents to produce outstanding results.

The higher your energy level, the more you can contribute to your environment. The more you contribute and give outstanding results, the more people see your value and want to work or be with you. This is how you create unbelievable and unexpected opportunities.

Tip: To raise your energy level, raise your life satisfaction, practice self-care and look at your wellbeing, simple meditation exercises can help.

  1. Stay Focused

Technology has evolved. It constantly exposes us to distractions like social media and streaming services. Our own house responsibilities demand time. Remember, if you don’t have focus in your life, it is next to impossible to become successful at anything.

Tip: Stay focused on your top five priorities in life. Define them and get ready to delegate. Stop doing things that are not important to you, shed the super girl persona. This principle changed my life. Like what Tony Robbins says: “Energy flows where the attention goes”. When you focus on something, it gets bigger, meaning energy and focus come together.

  1. Know Your Unique Selling Point (USP)

What attributes distinguish you from the others? What are your talents, strengths, expertise, or valuable experience you can share with others? Be clear about who you are and what you can offer. A unique selling point defines your unique position in the marketplace. A strong USP clearly articulates a specific benefit–one that other competitors don’t offer. Find that so you can stand out in the crowd.

We’re often blind to our own strengths because our strengths are often things we find easy, and we tend to believe that everyone can do the same. And often, our most extreme traits are both our strengths and weaknesses.

Tip: When you see a strength in someone else, point it out to them. They might not be aware of it, and they might reciprocate by pointing out a strength of yours that you’re blind to.

  1. Define Your Ideal Job

Identify a job or service that you love to do. What motivates you, what gives you energy and what you are good at. Don´t create your dream job by looking at what exists but fashion it by designing it all by yourself because that is the best way to find out what really matters to you without limit.

Tip: Start brainstorming. Write without filtering your thoughts and look at what comes up. Do that three times with different career options.

  1. Test Your Vision with the Market

Using specific business metrics, test your vision or ideal job on the market. Is it financially viable? What do you need to reach your goal? Who do you need to be in contact with? How many hours, months will you need? What kind of support could you use? Try to get as much information as possible before starting.

Tip: Make a list of all the unknown aspects and try to find solutions to all the points.

  1. Create a Personalized Roadmap

Remember, a goal without a plan is just a wish list. Your roadmap is your best tool to be certain it applies to your life and is aligned with your goals. This blueprint will keep you on track, ensuring all the important details are included. This structure will systematize your efforts, providing task efficiency.

Tip: Create a five year life goal plan and break it into five parts. Write a detailed roadmap for the coming three to six months, including other scenarios, and constantly update your plan as you go along.

  1. Design Your Brand

Whether in business or employment, you need to create an authentic identity. Being visible on and offline will definitely help. It’s a way for people to know what you’re all about: your ethos, goals and mission in the professional world. We all know high-profile individuals have a personal brand.

Recruiters utilize our activities online–LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter or other social media platforms to form an approximation of our personality based on our profile and other internet related activities. Our digital footprint is searchable. And today, employers and recruiters are using the internet to conduct employment background searches to gauge the character and interests of their potential employees. Interestingly, 57% of employers are less likely to interview a candidate they can’t find online.

Tip: Google yourself and see what you find. Make a careful audit of your public persona. Is it  aligned with your values and the image you want to project?

  1. Learn Effortless Negotiation

Confidence from undergoing the above process will make you a better advocate for yourself and, therefore, will raise your chance of getting what you want. Negotiation is all about leadership and communication. When you know your worth, you understand the need to get just compensation for your efforts.  Negotiation can become very pleasant, friendly and smooth if your confidence is competence backed with documented results.

According to a survey taken by CV-Library, only 42.6% of women feel comfortable asking for a pay rise, compared to 64.1% of men.

  1. Take Massive Actions

When I say take massive action, I mean it, if you want to be in the momentum, have to have the right energy level, consider taking action every day, every week. Taking massive action is not about making a courageous act once. It is consistent actions over a long period until you have achieved your goal.

Most of the days, it is little actions, and from time to time it can be scary actions. At any moment, a contradictory voice in your head can pop up, shutting the door at its face. We call it Bruno at my home from the Disney movie “Luca” .  We all have our “Bruno” moments, but if we stay firm and decide to move out of our comfort zone, we can have courage and energy to take action no matter what.

Tip: My best tip here is to have an accountability partner. I have one. We meet every week and we deep dive into our road maps.
