Embodied Leadership For Women: Gratitude As A Path To Authentic Power

Embodied leadership for women

I was fifteen when I decided I wasn’t good enough to dance.

After years of training and a premature audition for the Royal Ballet, that rejection convinced me the dream was over. I walked away from the studio with a sense of loss I didn’t fully comprehend.

I never stopped dancing though, and today I dance-not to perform, but to feel. That choice has grown into the foundation for what I teach about embodied leadership for creative rebels. There’s a serendipitous beauty in how my perceived challenges have become the gift that keeps on giving.

In business and life, we’re taught to be grateful when things flow. But true embodied leadership isn’t forged in easy seasons. It’s shaped when doors close and plans unravel.

In those moments, gratitude becomes more than a mindset. It becomes a practice of power-a somatic tool that transforms challenge into wisdom.

When Gratitude Moves Through the Body

After giving up dance, I searched for meaning elsewhere-including a transformative journey to India at 27. What I discovered was the power we all carry within: the wisdom of the body itself.

Through Niio Dance, I guide women to reclaim joy and play as essential elements of embodied leadership. Gratitude, when practiced somatically through movement and breath, doesn’t just change how we think. It changes how we ‘inhabit’ our leadership.

It’s the difference between ‘knowing’ you’re resilient and ‘feeling’ that resilience as a steady pulse in your chest, groundedness in your feet, spaciousness in your breath.

You can’t think your way through burnout. When you move with gratitude-appreciating how hard your body has worked for you—you invite in compassion and can dance through your frustrations and fears.

This is embodied leadership for women: the courage to let the body lead, and the wisdom to follow.

Resilience, Identity, and the Wisdom of Loss

In recent years, I lost both my parents. Through that grief, surprising clarity emerged-a deeper connection to my Chinese heritage and the roots that have always held me.

For years, I felt suspended between cultures-British-born, yet raised by Cantonese-speaking parents. When they passed, I feared losing that thread. Instead, it became luminous. Gratitude turned sorrow into belonging, reminding me that what’s gone can still grow within.

Navigating their deaths, I wasn’t just moving through grief-I was rewiring my nervous system. I could feel the softening in my shoulders, steadiness returning to my breath, my body learning to trust the ground again.

This is the yin and yang of embodied leadership-the dance between contraction and expansion, loss and renewal. Gratitude invites us to see every challenge as an initiation into greater wisdom.

The Science of Gratitude in Motion

What I felt in my body, science confirms: gratitude changes our brain and nervous system. It strengthens neural pathways related to reward and emotional regulation while calming the amygdala-our stress center.

According to the Somatic Movement Center (1), gratitude practices linked to body awareness enhance wellbeing and reduce anxiety far more effectively than cognitive practices alone.

Gratitude is a physiological shift. It anchors us into the steady rhythm of breath, heartbeat, and possibility. When women leaders access this state at will, their approach to decision-making, communication, and creative risk transforms.

The Grounded Heart Gratitude Practice

1. Begin with your feet on the earth.
– Sense into your heels, the balls of your feet, your toes.
– Feel the ground supporting you.

2. Place one hand on your belly, one on your heart.
– Let your breath be calm and even.
– Feel your belly rise as you inhale, soften as you exhale.

3. Bring to mind something that’s felt challenging.
– Rest your hands over your heart.
– Breathe into this space—feel the warmth, the expansion.
– Let your breath soften the edges of tension.

4. Gently ask your heart: What is this here to teach me?
– Sense into the learning, the quiet wisdom within it.

5. Now invite in gratitude-
– for this insight, for the strength, for the growth.
– Let this gratitude fill your whole body, rooting through your feet into the earth.

6. Take one more slow breath,
– and feel yourself grounded, open, and at peace.

Leading with Heart and Authentic Power

When we integrate gratitude into our work, movement, and leadership, we ripple change outward. We develop a softness that invites others to relax and open.

For women navigating business, creativity, and change, gratitude isn’t a soft skill. It’s structural—the foundation of clarity, resilience, and authentic expression.

As we embody it through dance and daily actions, we remind others that leadership can be joyful, not just driven. That power can be grounded, not grasping.

I’m grateful now for what ballet gave me: precision, discipline, devotion. And equally grateful I left—because that ending became the beginning of something truer. A practice where dance isn’t about perfection, but presence. Not performance, but power.

This article (2) in Women’s Thrive Magazine expresses the power of dance as a mirror for embodiment and leadership. For me, dance is movement as medicine, creativity as courage, and gratitude as the choreography of becoming.
