Dread Public Speaking? Try These 5 Spiritual Practices

Does the thought of public speaking make your throat tense up? Does your stomach sink when it’s your turn to come off mute? Does your voice sound totally out of alignment with who you are? These are all signs your throat chakra needs some love. The throat chakra is the body’s energy centre for communication and expression and these five simple practices will help it hum like a dream so you can speak with confidence and actually enjoy the experience.

  • Look Up

When preparing for a speech it can be tempting to focus on the words on the page. You might find yourself sitting in front of your computer having a total mind blank before starting a presentation. Perhaps you madly read over the speech before presenting and it makes you feel more anxious. This can contract our energy rather than expand it. Instead of looking down to a page – Look Up. Go outside and gaze up to the clouds, the trees, and the night sky. If you’re in a room, look up to the ceiling.  This will help open your crown chakra and allow downloads from the universe to flow on in. It will help you feel calm even under pressure, you’ll gain perspective, and above all, tap into your reason for speaking.

  • Find a Performance Scent

Our sense of smell is powerful for triggering our memory. Just one hint of a scent transports you to a time and place in your life or can remind you of a person. This is an incredible tool to use for public speaking. Choose a particular essential oil or fragrance that you associate with confident speaking and smell it beforehand – every time. It’s especially useful if you’re not in the mood for speaking and you need to snap into the zone. Essential oils to aid clear communication include peppermint, spearmint, frankincense, rosemary, and my favourite – eucalyptus.

  • Practice Aura Breathing

Deep breathing is fantastic before and during speaking to calm nerves and produce a great voice. Oxygen fuels our voice – and without breath, there is no voice. Practising Aura Breathing takes things to the next level as it charges our energy. So much of speaking is not what we say but the energy we bring. Interlace your fingers and push the palms away and draw your arms up in front of you to coincide with your inhale and then circle the arms down by your side to match the exhale. Repeat. As you’re breathing visualise your aura or energetic field growing and glowing around you.  This helps you weave a gorgeous vibrant orb around you to take incredible presence into your speaking scenario.

  • Use Crystals

Tapping into the power of crystals is a great way to speak with more confidence. They can be worn in your jewellery, placed in your pocket or your bag or sit on your desk if it’s a virtual presentation. Crystals serve as incredible symbols to remind you what you’re capable of! My favourite crystals for speaking include –  Rose Quartz – Self-love and self-confidence Aquamarine – Courage of self-expression Sodalite – Helps you speak your vision Tiger’s Eye – Confidence  Labradorite – Reminder that you are the magic

  • Speak Affirmations into Water

Self-talk manifests as real talk. So giving yourself a pep talk before speaking is a must. My favourite affirmations include – I have something valuable to say People want to listen to me I deserve this space To supercharge your affirmations, speak them into a glass of water. The molecules in the water will absorb your energy and then speak to the molecules in your body and you’ll infuse the positivity with every sip. It will also encourage you to stay hydrated which is a must when speaking. Try these techniques ahead of your next speech and enjoy the feeling of speaking from your soul and having your voice heard.
