Risy Morales

My name is Risy Morales, and I am a event designer located in Lancaster, PA. I have been in business since Feb 2022, but have been everyone\\\'s favorite pro-bono designer for over 10 years. I was the girl at church who did everyone\\\'s baby shower, wedding and birthday party. 2 years ago, my husband went down to our basement and found my secret stash of table linens, back drops, curtains and decorations. He gave me an ultimatum, we either sell everything or I make what I do a business. I chose business and 2 years later, I have grown over 2k followers on Facebook, have served over 75 clients and am very hopeful for the future.

Crossing Over: From Hobby to Small Business

The Transition Guide to Turing Your Hobby to Small Business

“Start your business, or we are getting rid of all this stuff.

Those were the words my husbands told me January of 2022. We had just celebrated quite a few milestones and we were headed to the basement (my sanctuary, aka no boys allowed) where I kept over $10,000 worth of event decorations. Bins and bins of tablecloths, runners, curtains, backdrops, pillows, dessert trays etc. You name it, I had it. For over 10 years everyone around me knew me as the party girl.

Having a baby shower? Call Risy

Getting married? Call Risy.

Graduation? Call Risy.

This was my life for over 10 years, the “church IT GIRL” The one who would love to help anyone, and not charge a dime. That was me. All until that faithful day my husband of 20 years, followed me downstairs, saw my candy stash, and said, “No More.”

At first, I was offended, you can’t tell me what to do! But then, I realized that everything he was saying was true. And at some point, what started off as a Hobby has the potential to be a six-figure business.

There is a switch, it doesn’t happen overnight. The imposter syndrome will have you believing you’re a fraud for even thinking you could turn a passion into a profitable business. It takes self-discipline, self-love, and the right squad to help you cross over. For me it took 1 event, for me to realize “This is not a hobby for me, this is a business” and if I want other people to receive me as a reputable business then I need to believe that for myself first. So here is what I did to triple my out-of-home business in 6 months.

How I Triple My Out-of-Home Business in 6 Months

1. Avoid taking payment using money transfer apps

I remember the first time I sent my first Invoice and received my first online payment. It felt different. It didn’t feel like I was doing a favor for a friend or family member. There was a legitimate transaction that occurred and now I have a money trail. The client felt at ease, and I felt empowered.

2. Make that contract

At first, contracts can seem scary, but to be honest what’s even scarier? Taking thousands of dollars from someone without a contract. Contracts protect you and your client, and with soundness of mind, your client will be more willing to work with you, and not argue about your set price.

3. Engage with your audience.

I have grown my Facebook page by 500 followers in the last 6 weeks, by doing this one thing – ENGAGING. Find groups that have people of like minds, put out educational content or entertaining content, engage, and watch your page grow overnight. This will help open other streams of income, and that’s what you want.

4. Stick to your prices.

Don’t let anyone at any point convince you that you are not worth your set price. There are a lot of opinions out there, some will say you charged too little, and some will say you charged too much. What matters is how you feel when you leave a job. If you feel like you won, then that should be good enough.

I told a young business owner this, when you stop treating your business like a hobby, your client will find you. And I stick to that motto and hope that if you’re struggling with the crossover, this article will give you the confidence needed to take that leap of faith and become that boss babe you were always meant to be.
