Building Self Confidence from the Inside Out: Courage, Growth, and the Power of Small Steps

Building self confidence from the inside out

Building Self Confidence from the Inside Out

Have you ever felt like ‘confidence’ is something everyone else had in their arsenal —but you?

They know what to say, when, and how to deliver their point. You, on the other hand, find yourself stuck in ‘analysis-paralysis’ when making big decisions or getting gnawing knots in your stomach before speaking up in a meeting, the hesitation before hitting ‘publish’ on a post, or the voice whispering, “Who am I to do this?”

I’ve been in this same situation, too. Now, as a Life Coach who works with ambitious women, I’ve come upon an epiphany: Confidence isn’t the prerequisite for action—it’s the result of it.

Building self confidence isn’t about waiting until you feel ready; it’s a skill you develop through courage, consistent habits, and a growth-oriented mindset. It’s something you work on daily, day in and day out.

Courage is the First Step to Building Self Confidence

Do you think it’s some innate power confident people have? Let me bust that myth right away: No, they weren’t born this way. What looks like ‘natural confidence’ results from countless moments of courage stacked on top of each other over time. It’s the grind of it all that makes it seem smooth.

When I launched Mission ENSPIRE, I felt entirely out of my depth. My palms would get sweaty, my heart raced, and that inner critic at the back of my mind was relentlessly working overtime. But I jumped all in, anyway. Confidence isn’t something we’re born with—it grows with each courageous act.

Every confident person you admire has felt fear—they just acted despite it. They recognize that courage comes first, and confidence follows. The reality is that letting go of fear and self-doubt is essential to building self-confidence. You don’t need to eliminate these feelings (impossible anyway!), but you do need to stop letting them make your decisions.

Three Ways to Start Building Self Confidence Today

  1. Take Micro Steps

Massive confidence isn’t built in dramatic, overnight transformations. It’s built-in five-minute chunks of bravery. I didn’t immediately book a stadium and invite thousands when I started my coaching practice. I reached out to one potential client and then another. Each small step rewired my brain to recognize, “I can do this”. You can build self-confidence daily by taking micro steps.

That might look like:

  • Sending one outreach email
  • Speaking up once in a meeting
  • Posting content when it feels scary
  • Having a difficult conversation you’ve been avoiding

Start by identifying your 10-minute ‘courage task’ for today. What small action would stretch your comfort zone just enough to build momentum?

2. Track Your Wins

Our brains are wired to focus on what will likely go wrong rather than what’s right—always waiting for the other shoe to drop. This negativity bias undermines confidence by keeping us fixated on our failures instead of our successes.

Combat this by deliberately tracking your wins—even the tiny ones. I started a practice this year of keeping a simple notebook by my desk where I jot down daily wins. Some entries are significant (“Signed new client!”), while others seem minor but still matter (“Spoke up when I disagreed in the strategy meeting”).

This practice isn’t about feeding my ego—it’s about evidence. When self-doubt creeps in, your wins journal proves your capabilities and progress. Create a ‘confidence inventory’ by listing five things that went well this week. Review it when you need a boost.

3. Affirm Your Worth

During the Black Women Leading Retreat that I attended in 2023, we did an exercise that initially made me cringe: recording self-affirmations and playing them back. I felt ridiculous, but something profound happened when I heard my voice affirming my strengths and capabilities.

Ever wonder why affirmations work? Like how can repeating a few positive statements about yourself in the mirror lead to actual change? Well, it’s proven by science! Affirmations disrupt your negative thoughts cycle with intentional, positive alternatives. It’s not magic— it’s mental training.

Try recording affirmations like:

  • “I trust my abilities and insights.”
  • “I handle challenges with growing confidence.”
  • “I’m building my confidence muscle every day.”

Listen to them during your morning routine, before important meetings, or whenever imposter syndrome strikes.

Building self confidence thrives in the presence of encouragement and accountability. Consider finding an accountability partner who can celebrate your wins and encourage your growth.

Silencing the Inner Critic

If you’ve ever heard that inner voice whispering, “You’re not good enough”, you’re not alone. That inner critic shows up for everyone, but confident people have learned to recognize its voice without accepting its verdict. When my inner critic pipes up before presentations or launches, I’ve learned to respond with: “Thanks for trying to protect me, but I’m choosing courage today.”

Reclaiming your energy through boundary setting reinforces your confidence. This means learning to say no to opportunities that drain you, limiting negative self-talk, and protecting your time and energy. If you’re looking for tools to quiet your inner critic and build a more compassionate mindset, I highly recommend visiting self-compassion.org, a science-backed resource for self-kindness practices.

Start Your Confidence Journey Today

Building self confidence isn’t about feeling certain before you act—it’s about taking small, brave steps that prove to yourself what you’re capable of. Each time you choose courage over comfort, your confidence grows a little stronger. Remember, perfection isn’t the goal—progress is. The question isn’t whether you feel confident enough; it’s whether you’re willing to be brave enough to take that next small step.

What’s one bold step you’ll take this week to start building your self confidence from the inside out?

If you’re ready to dream bigger, begin by envisioning your bold next chapter, your confidence journey starts with a single brave choice.

… and it can start today. Right now.
